"My prerogative" es una canción R&B, escrita en 1988 por Bobby Brown, Gene Griffin y Teddy Riley. La canción fue un éxito para Bobby Brown en 1988. "My prerogative" es el segundo sencillo del álbum Don't Be Cruel de Bobby Brown, lanzado durante el último cuarto de 1988.

"My prerogative" fue un verdadero éxito en el Billboard Hot 100, y el más reconocido de Brown. La canción fue cover por Spears y por la banda punk/indie Británica Selfish Cunt, a pesar de que cambiaron el título por "Bobby".

La versión original se convirtió en un gran éxito en los Estados Unidos, logró llegar en enero de 1989 a la posición número #1 del Billboard Hot 100, y se certificó de Oro con ventas de 500.000 copias.

La lírica, refleja la imagen de chico malo de Brown, y fue representativa del sonido popular New jack swing de la década de los 80'.
