Cuphea es un género de plantas con flores con 260 especies de plantas caducas y perennes nativas de regiones calurosas o tropicales de América.

Descripción

Su tamaño varía desde las hierbas rastreras a los arbustos semi leñosos que alcanzan los 2 m de altura.

C. ignea y C. micropetalia son plantas favoritas de los colibrís.

Algunas especies de Cuphea se utilizan para la producción del aceite cuphea, de interés como fuente de producción de triglicéridos de cadena media. La producción comercial se ha canalizado sobre un híbrido derivado de C. lanceolata y C. viscosissima.

El botánico Shirley A. Graham, del Missouri Botanical Garden, ha estudiado extensamente este género, publicando sus resultados en dos volúmenes de la serie Systematic Botany Monographs.
