Saeberht de Essex

Saebert (o Sebert o Sabert), fallecido cerca del año 616, fue rey de Essex aproximadamente entre los años 604 y 616.

Fue sobrino del rey Etelberto de Kent y se convirtió al cristianismo en el 604.[1] Fue bautizado por San Mellitus, obispo de Londres. Sin embargo, su hijo regresó al paganismo y, tras la muerte de Saebert, expulsó de Londres a Mellitus.[2]

Saebert era hijo de Sledda. Una tumba, hallada en Prittlewell, Essex, se cree que pudo haber sido la cámara funeraria de Saebert. Varias láminas en forma de cruz, quizás cosidas a su sudario, confirmarían la aceptada historia de la conversión de Saebert al cristianismo. Otros objetos funerales hallados, tales como tazones de cristal y de cobre, indicarían una continuación de creencias paganas.
