Robert Tools (31 de julio de 1942 - 30 de noviembre de 2001), fue el primer paciente en recibir un corazón artificial autónomo, el AbioCor. La operación se realizó el 2 de julio del 2001. Sobrevivió durante 151 días sin un corazón biológico. El doctor Joseph Fredi del Saint Thomas Hospital en Nashville tuvo la idea de sustituirle el corazón biológico por uno artificial.
