Este baile fue creado por parejas caribeñas y africanas. Más tarde, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, se desarrolló en los suburbios de Nueva York. Hizo su debut en un Music-Hall americano e inmediatamente se volvió popular en todas las salas de baile. El Fox-Trot y el Quickstep tienen el mismo origen: en los años 20 muchas bandas musicales tocaban Slow-foxtrot muy rápido, lo cual le daba más alegría al baile. A partir de aquí se separaron los dos bailes, descendiendo así el compás del Slow-Foxtrot y pasando a ser el Quickstep la versión rápida del Foxtrot bailado a 48 compases por minuto. El charlestón tuvo muchas influencias en el desarrollo del Quickstep.

Es un Fox rápido, y también el más "frívolo" de los bailes Standard. De carácter desenfadado, son muy comunes los pasos saltados y los punteos, donde los pies se apoyan en el suelo sólo durante un instante. Esto transfiere al baile unas características de ligereza y gracia realmente encantadoras.

El quickstep posee escasas diferencias entre el ISTD (Sociedad Imperial de Maestros de Danza), y el IDTA (Asociación Internacional de Maestros de Danza), y aunque no es oficial en las competencias de baile americanas, sigue formando parte del baile social.
