Prithvi Narayan Shah (en nepalí: पृथ्वी नारायण शाह, * Gorkha, 1723 - † Nuvakot, 11 de enero de 1775) fue el primer rey de Nepal y es considerado como el fundador histórico del moderno Nepal.

En el siglo XVIII el territorio que actualmente ocupa el reino de Nepal, estaba conformado por pequeños señoríos o reinos independientes, acostumbrados a combatir entre ellos. Prithvi Narayan Shah era el rey de Gurkha, quienes se convirtieron en la base principal de su ejército. Con un impulso unificador, Prithvi sometió uno por unos los pequeños estados colindantes, estableciendo como objetivo final conquistar la principal ciudad de los Himalayas, Katmandú. Dirigiendo una sorpresiva ofensiva, el rey de los gurkhas atacó por sorpresa la ciudad el mismo día en que se celebraba una antigua fiesta conocida como "Indra Jatra". Conquistada la capital de sus nuevos dominios, poco tiempo se demoró en establecer un régimen hegemónico en la zona, absorbiendo regularmente los pequeños estados de los alrededores.

Considerado como la figura creadora del moderno Nepal, en el reino es considerado como el padre de la patria. Fuera de ser un rey guerrero, tuvo el tino de establecer alianzas con el fin de establecer y consolidar su dominio al interior del reino. Sin embargo, su política con el vecino Tíbet fue más dura, y a mediados del siglo XVIII se habían interrumpido las relaciones comerciales. Con respecto a los británicos, siguió la política de encerrarse en su reino a puerta cerrada, prohibiendo el ingreso de extranjeros a su territorio. Murió en 1775 a los 52 años.
