El apellido Popham es parte de la herencia de las antiguas tribus anglosajonas de Gran Bretaña. Es derivado de cuando la familia vivió en Popham, Hants (actualmente Hampshire). Otra variante de este apellido es Poppam.

La etimología de la primera parte del apellido es incierta, los especialistas medievales creen quederivada del vieja palabra inglesa popp, que significa el guijarro. La segunda parte ham significa granja o recinto.

Se encuentran registro del apellido desde 903 en censos tomados por los reyes para temas impositivos y como Popeham en 1086 en el libro Domesday, otra variante que se ha registrado es Poppam.

En los registro de emigración a las colonias británicas en América figuran Edward y George Popham en Maine en 1607. Richard Popham se instaló en Nueva York en 1820.
