Pentápolis

Pentápolis, del griego penta (cinco) y polis (ciudad). Nombre que se da a la agrupación de cinco ciudades. Las más conocidas son:

  • La Pentápolis argelina formada por las ciudades de Ghardaïa, Beni Isguen, Bou-Noura, El Ateuff y Melika.
  • La Pentápolis filistea, situada al sudoeste del actual Israel y formada, según el pasaje bíblico (Jos, 13:3), por las ciudades de Gaza, Ascalón, Asdod, Gat y Ecrón.
  • La Pentápolis bíblica, situada al sur de Canaán, estaba formada por las ciudades de Sodoma, Gomorra, Adama, Seboim y Segor. Según la Biblia, allí se estableció Lot (לוט), sobrino de Abraham, hijo de su hermano Arán. Ciudades dadas al vicio, fueron castigadas por Dios.
Ante la intercesión de Abraham con el Señor: éste respondió: si se hallaren 10 justos en aquella ciudad, le contestó el Señor, perdonaré a todo el pueblo por amor a ellos; y Dios castigó a la Pentápolis, haciendo bajar fuego y azufre, convirtiendo toda la región en polvo y ceniza.
Dios salvó a Lot, pero convirtió a su mujer en estatua de sal por mirar hacia atrás en contra de lo advertido por los ángeles enviados a castigar las ciudades.
