El Mercury Prize (Premio de Mercurio), antes conocido como el "Mercury Music Prize" (Premio Musical de Mercurio) y actualmente conocido como el "Nationwide Mercury Prize" (Premio de Mercurio a Escala Nacional) debido a razones de patrocinio, es un premio de música anual dado al mejor álbum del Reino Unido o Irlanda. Fue establecido por la British Phonographic Industry y BARD (la Asociación Británica de Discográficas) en 1992 como un alternativo a los premios Brit. Originalmente fue patrocinado por Mercury Communications (ahora caduco), después en 1998 por Technics, en 2002 por Panasonic y desde 2004 Nationwide Building Society.

Normalmente los premios tienen lugar en septiembre pero los álbumes candidatos se anuncian en julio. A menudo se nota que los grupos que son candidatos o que ganan el premio tienen un gran aumento en ventas de su álbum, en particular en cuanto a los candidatos menos conocidos.^[1] Las nominaciones son elegidas por un panel de músicos, directores de músico, periodistas y otras figuras en la industria de música en el Reino Unido y Irlanda. El Mercury Prize también tiene una reputación de ser dado a desvalidos en vez de los favoritos.^[2]

Críticos

Los ganadores en 1994 fueron M People, una decisión controversial cuando se considera que la preselección de candidatos incluyó álbumes de Paul Weller, Blur, Pulp y The Prodigy.^{[3] [4] [5]}

Otros periodistas musicales que fueron críticos de los premios dijieron que el premio de 2005 no debería haber sido dado a Antony and the Johnsons porque fueron un grupo basado en los Estados Unidos, aunque nacieron en el Reino Unido.^{[6] [7]} En 2006 el álbum de Mark Langan y Isobell Campbell, Ballad of the Broken Seas fue incluido en la preselección de candidatos, aunque Lanegan no es británico, y varios miembros de los Guillemots, que fueron candidatos en 2006, fueron de Brasil y Canadá.^{[8] [9] [10]}

La presencia de grabaciones de música clásica, música folclórica y jazz ha sido citada por algunos como anomala, exponiendo que comparar estas grabaciones con otros candidatos puede ser injusto.^[11] Los candidatos clásicos han incluido John Tavener, Peter Maxwell Davies, Gavin Bryars y Nicholas Maw. Ningún ha ganado, y no ha sido un álbum clásico en la preselección de candidatos desde 2002.
