Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) nació en Nueva York el 14 de junio de 1904. Se interesó por la fotografía cuando estudiaba en la Universidad de Cornell. Fue alumna de Clarence H. White en la Universidad de Columbia y después abrió su estudio en Cleveland donde se especializó en la fotografía arquitectónica.

Era una mujer de izquierdas que hizo varios viajes a la antigua Unión soviética (URSS). Por ello, en 1931 publicó "Eyes on Russia". Profundamente sensibilizada por la depresión en el país llegó a interesarse por la política.

Se casó con Erskine Caldwell en 1939 y fueron los únicos periodistas extranjeros en la ocupada URSS tras la invasión del ejército alemán en 1941.

Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se interesó por la campaña de la no violencia impulsada por Gandhi.
