Lionel Shriver

Lionel Shriver (nacida Margaret Ann Shriver, 18 de mayo de 1957) es periodista y escritora. Nació en Gastonia, Carolina del Norte (Estados Unidos), en el seno de una familia profundamente religiosa, siendo su padre un predicador presbiteriano. Cambió su nombre a la edad de 15 años de Margaret Ann a Lionel porque le gustaba cómo sonaba. Se graduó por la Universidad de Columbia en Bellas Artes, y también obtuvo un máster. Ha vivido en Nairobi, Bangkok y Belfast, y en la actualidad reside en Londres. Está casada con el batería de jazz Jeff Williams.

Tenemos que hablar de Kevin 2005. Publicada en Anagrama.

En el 2005 ganó el Premio Orange de ficción (Orange Prize) por su séptima novela Tenemos que hablar de Kevin, novela de suspense que estudia la ambivalencia maternal, y el efecto que podría haber producido en su hijo Kevin y en la decisión que éste toma de asesinar a siete compañeros de clase unos días antes de cumplir dieciséis años. El libro creó mucha controversia, y consiguió su éxito a través del boca a boca.

Actividad periodística

En julio del 2005 Shriver empezó a escribir artículos para el diario inglés The Guardian [1], en los que comparte sus opiniones respecto a la forma de ver la maternidad en las culturas y sociedades occidentales, la estrechez de miras de las autoridades del gobierno británico, la importancia de las bibliotecas (planea dejar en herencia su librería al Belfast Library Board de cuyas bibliotecas sacó tanto provecho cuando vivió en Irlanda del Norte.
