Althaea es un género de 6-12 especies de plantas herbáceas perennes perteneciente a la familia Malvaceaes, incluyendo a Althaea officinalis, nativa de Europa y oeste de Asia. Se encuentran en bancales y riveras de rios y charcas salobres, prefiriendo la humedad y tierras soleadas. Sus tallos alcanzan 1-2 metros de altura y florece en verano. Las hojas son palmeadas lobuladas con 3-7 lóbulos.

Especies de Althaea son alimento de las larvas de algunas especies de Lepidopteras, incluyendo Bucculatrix quadrigemina.

El género anteriormente tenía especies ahora incluidas en el género Alcea.

Propiedades

Como hierbas medicinales se usan para tratar las úlceras de garganta. Támbién para las úlceras gástricas.

Las flores y los tallos tiernos son comestibles. A menudo se añaden a las ensaladas o hervidas o fritas. Se utilizan también como cosmético para la piel.
