Primera Visión

En la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, la Primera Visión fue una teofanía experimentada por José Smith (hijo), durante la década de 1820 en un lugar cercano a su casa, llamado hoy en día la "arboleda sagrada" por los mormones, al oeste de Nueva York. Smith dijo que al orar para saber cual iglesia era la verdadera, como respuesta, mensajeros celestiales le dijeron que todas las iglesias existentes en la época eran falsas y se habían corrompido.

Durante los primeros años de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, la posición de Smith como profeta derivó principalmente de su publicación del Libro de Mormón, el cual dijo haber traducido de planchas de oro revelados a él por un ángel. Al transcurrir las décadas de 1830 y 1840, Smith dio varios relatos de esa primera visión, tal como hicieron un número de sus asociados y conocidos. Como muchos otros americanos que vivían en la frontera de principios del siglo XIX, la familia de Smith fácilmente aceptaba visiones y teofanías.^[4] En 1811, el abuelo materno de Joseph Smith (hijo), Solomon Mack, describió unas series de visiones y voces de Dios que fueron resultado de una conversación con el cristianismo ortodoxo a la edad de los setenta y seis años.^[5]

El abuelo paterno de Joseph Smith (hijo), Asael Smith, fue criado en la Iglesia Congregacional pero fue atraído por las enseñanzas de John Murray, un universalista. Smith abandonó el calvinismo, y por un tiempo sirvió como moderador en un grupo de universalistas.
