La información acerca del matemático John T. Graves es escasa en la red, y las únicas referencias exactas son las de una carta enviada por William Rowan Hamilton (descubridor de los cuaterniones) a John T. Graves en la fecha de 17 de eoctubre de 1843. Esa carta fue publicada en Londres, en el Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, tomo 25, en el año de 1.844.

La carta era un compendio de discusiones acerca de ecuaciones de segundo grado y de la unidad imaginaria. Por lo demás, no se dispone de ninguna información adicional descubierta en enciclopedias tradicionales o electrónicas.
