John Newton (24 de julio de 1725 - 21 de diciembre de 1807) fue un autor inglés de himnos conocido sobre todo por el himno más conocido para la tradición angloparlante cristiana: "Amazing Grace" ("Sublime Gracia").

Biografía

La primera parte de su vida, Newton fue comerciante de esclavos, actividad en la que se destacó por su crueldad y abyección, conductas de las que se arrepintió para convertirse en pastor protestante (llegó a clérigo anglicano) y escribir ése y muchos otros himnos. Amazing Grace es su obra más conocida, cantada por iglesias protestantes tales como la presbiteriana, la metodista y la bautista. Posteriormente este himno fue adoptado por la iglesia católica, eso sí, variando y desviando la letra original. A pesar de su pasado como negrero, fue un destacado abolicionista que luchó para erradicar de Inglaterra el comercio de esclavos.

Sublime gracia

Durante años se pensó que un cancionero de 1831 titulado "Virginia Harmony" era el primer testimonio escrito de la melodía, hasta que se descubrió el "Columbian Harmony" en 1990. La melodia que regularmente está asociada al texto es New Britain. La traducción al castellano se debe a Cristóbal E. Morales.
