Eteocles es el nombre de varios personajes de la mitología griega.

Rey de Tebas

Eteocles y Polinices, por Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1725–30).

Era hijo de Edipo y Yocasta, y hermano de Polinices, Ismene y Antígona.

Al conocerse los crímenes de su padre, los dos hermanos varones se negaron a socorrerlo cuando fue desterrado y éste les maldijo.

Convinieron reinar un año cada uno en Tebas, pero cuando acabó su plazo, Eteocles no quiso ceder el trono a su hermano, por lo que Polinices, Adrasto (rey de Argos) y otros héroes reclutaron un ejército e iniciaron una expedición de conquista conocida como los siete contra Tebas en la que Polinices y Eteocles se dieron muerte mutuamente.

Eteocles fue padre de Laodamante, que también reinó en Tebas.

Rey de Orcómeno

Era hijo de Andreo, rey de Orcómeno, y Euipe, aunque también se decía que su verdadero padre era el río Cefiso. Heredó el trono de Orcómeno y se le atribuye el origen del culto a las Cárites, puesto que la leyenda dice que fue el primer hombre que realizó sacrificios para ellas. También en Orcómeno se veneraban unas piedras que se decía que le fueron enviadas desde el cielo a Eteocles.

Este Eteocles no tuvo descendencia y a su muerte el trono de Orcómeno pasó a Flegias.
