Strategos

Strategos (plural: strategoi, del griego στρατηγός) es el nombre usado en la Antigua Grecia para designar al general, o sea el comandante en jefe y supremo de un cuerpo militar terrestre. Era un magistrado de la antigua Atenas.

Los estrategos eran originariamente los diez jefes militares que las diez tribus creadas por Clístenes elegían, a razón de uno por tribu, para mandar las fuerzas que cada una de ellas aportaba a la totalidad del ejército, y formaban el Estado Mayor del polemarca, en esta época jefe supremo del ejército ateniense. Eran elegidos para el plazo de un año y sus cargos eran reelegibles.[1] Sólo a partir del 487 a. C. asumieron el mando del ejército, desplazando de sus funciones al arconte polemarca.

En los imperios helénico y bizantino también servía para describir a un gobernador militar.

En la actualidad corresponde al grado máximo en el Ejército griego.
