El environment surge en Estados Unidos, a principio de los años cincuenta y en torno al compositor John Cage y la tradición dadaísta -no hay que olvidar el papel de Duchamp en Nueva York-, Se empieza a hacer visible unas orientaciones que desembocarán en una nueva forma de práctica artística: el Environment y el Happening. En las definiciones de Kaprow: "Environment se refiere a una forma de arte que llena una estancia (o un espacio exterior) rodeando al visitante e incorporando toda clase de materiales, incluyendo luces, sonidos y color." Frente a la civilización tecnocrática, el Environment y el Happening plantean una valoración del ritual y de la magia, rompen con las limitaciones de los géneros artísticos establecidos, y proponen una relación directa con el público, un arte de ideas y de acción, en lugar de la producción de objetos. Ello supone, asimismo, un rechazo de la mercantilización, de la propiedad privada, del valor comercial del objeto artístico. Se trata de creaciones efímeras de las que se hace difícil seguir la historia, pues solo quedan textos, descripciones o alguna imagen. El desarrollo posterior de la Perfomance, los Events, el Body Art, y algunas manifestaciones del Arte Conceptual, derivan de la línea en que se situaban los Environments y los Happenings. Del círculo de John Cage surgieron también los pintores Robert Rauschenberg y Jasper Johns, que fueron un anticipo del Pop-Art.
