Un Echovirus es un tipo de virus ARN que pertenece al género Enterovirus de la familia Picornaviridae. Se encuentran en el tracto gastrointestinal (de ahí el nombre del género Enterovirus) y su exposición es causa de enfermedades e infecciones oportunistas.[1]

El virus se aisló de las heces de niños asintomáticos a principios de la década de 1950, justo después de que las técnicas de cultivo de las células se hubieran desarrollado. El nombre de ECHO procede del acrónimo de "enteric cytopathic human orphan" o "virus huérfano citopático entérico" (virus huérfano significa que un virus no está asociado a ninguna enfermedad conocida). Aunque desde entonces han sido relacionados con diversas enfermedades, el nombre original aún se utiliza.[2]

El virus es altamente infeccioso y su principal objetivo son los niños. Es una de las principales causas de enfermedad febril aguda enfermedad en lactantes y niños de corta edad y es la causa más común de meningitis aséptica. La infección de un niño con este virus después del nacimiento puede causar graves enfermedades sistémicas y es asociado con una elevada tasa de mortalidad infantil. Los echovirus pueden imitar los síntomas causados por otras bacterias e infecciones virales, por lo que las infecciones por echovirus son a menudo tratadas con terapias destinadas para otras infecciones. Esto puede llevar a la evolución de bacterias resistentes a los antibióticos.
