El cream tea, Devonshire tea o Cornish cream tea[1] es el tomado en combinación con scones, nata concentrada (clotted cream) y mermelada. La idea que se tiene del tea cream es a veces sinónimo de clase alta.

Historía

El nombre de "Devonshire tea" proviene del condado de Devon en Inglaterra, lugar donde existe esta costumbre local. El origen exacto del cream tea es hoy en día una disputa, existen sin embargo evidencias de que el origen fue en Tavistock alrededor del 997.[2]

Variaciones

Se sirven otros ingredientes en el cream tea y pueden ser sandwiches de pepinillos (Cucumber sandwich) o berro sin las cortezas y cortados pequeños (en forma de 'biscuits'); por regla general estos elementos no forman parte de los cream tea.

En Cornwall es tradicional servir el cream tea con el "Cornish split", un tipo de pan dulce denominado: bread roll, en lugar de los scones.[3] Otra variación del 'cream tea' se denomina "Thunder and Lightning" ('trueno y rayo') que consiste en una ronda de pan cubierto con nata montada y sirope dorado (golden syrup).[1]
