Acanthus es un género de cerca de 30 spp. de fanerógamas de la familia de las Acantáceas, nativo de regiones tropicales y templadas del Viejo Mundo, con la mayor diversidad de spp. en la región mediterránea y Asia. El nombre vulgar es: Acanto.

Descripción

Comprende plantas de 0,4 a 2 m de altura, herbáceas perennes, raramente subarbustos, con hojas espinosas y flor en racimo de colores blanco o púrpura.

Cultivo y usos

Varias especies, especialmente A. spinosa y A. mollis, se cultivan como planta ornamentales.

El follaje es la base de un estilo de ornamentación arquitectónica; ver acanto (ornamento).
