Tower Hamlets es un municipio (borough) de la ciudad de Londres, en el Reino Unido, situado al este de la ciudad y al norte del río Támesis.[1] Cubre una gran zona del tradicional East End e incluye también la mayor parte de la redesarrollada región de Docklands. Muchos de los edificios más altos de la ciudad se localizan en la Isla de los Perros, al sur del municipio.

El nombre de Tower Hamlets era el que históricamente se le daba a la división del condado de Middlesex, y que cubría no solo el actual municipio, sino también parte del de Hackney.[2] El guardián de la Torre de Londres tenía especial jurisdicción sobre el área desde el siglo XVI hasta 1889. A los habitantes de Tower Hamlets se les requería originalmente proporcionar labradores para la Torre de Londres. Más tarde, el guardián se convirtió en lugarteniente del área, organizando y haciendo crecer la milicia local. Bajo el Acto de Reforma de 1832 el área llegó a ser un distrito parlamentario. El nombre continuó usándose para las circunscripciones hasta 1918.

Ubicación

Tower Hamlets está localizado al este de la ciudad de Londres y del Támesis. El municipio de Hackney se sitúa al norte, mientras que el río Lee conforma el límite con el municipio de Newham al este. La parte más sur de Tower Hamlets forma una parte de la llanura aluvial del Támesis.
