Shihezi (chino: 石河子; Pinyin: Shíhézǐ; شىخەنزە (Xihənzə}) es una ciudad en el Norte de Xinjiang.

Población

Shihezi es la segunda ciudad más grande de Xinjiang, después de Urumqi.

Su población es de 640000 personas (2007). La mayoría de los pobladores son de la etnia han y minorías que hacen un 5,4% de la población.[1]

Geografía

Shihezi se halla a unos 136 km de Urumqi.

Historia

Las granjas alrededor de Shihezi promovieron el desarrollo de la ciudad. Estas granjas estructuradas casi de manera militar producen materiales para las fábricas que mueven la economía de la ciudad. En 1974 el gobierno nacional elevó a Shihezi al rango de ciudad.

Economía

Actualmente las industrias más importantes de Shihezi son las de textiles y comida. Hay conexiones de trenes hacia Wusu y Ürümqi y autopistas hacia el resto del país. La ciudad es un centro para las granjas de la región. Se cultiva una gran cantidad de caña de azúcar cerca de Shihezi. También hay un importante cultivo de algodón.[2]

Educación

La Universidad de Shihezi se encuentra en Shihezi. Es la segunda universidad de Xinjiang, con unos 40 mil estudiantes.
