Grahamstown es una ciudad de la Provincia Oriental del Cabo de la República de Sudáfrica y es la sede del municipio de Makana. La población de Grahamstown en 2003, fue de 124.758 hab. La población de las áreas circundantes, incluyendo la ciudad real fue de 41. 799 de los cuales 77,4% fueron negro, el 11,8% de color, 10% blanco, y el 0,7% Asiatico. Desde 1994, ha habido una afluencia considerable de personas Negras de la antigua Ciskei xhosa, que se encuentra justo al este. La ciudad tiene una abrumadora mayoría blanca, mientras que los municipios vecinos (geográficamente separados, pero unidos políticamente) tienen cada vez mayor o mayorías de color Negro.

Situado a unos 130 km de Port Elizabeth y 180 km de East London , Grahamstown es también la sede de la Universidad de Rhodes, una diócesis de la Iglesia Anglicana de África Meridional y el hogar de la Universidad de la Transfiguración la única universidad de provincia residencial de la Iglesia Anglicana de Sudáfrica y un Tribunal Superior. Sin embargo, no forma parte de la Red de las Ciudades de Sudáfrica.
