Coil fue un grupo inglés de música experimental e industrial formado en 1982 por John Balance —posteriormente llamado "Jhonn Balance"— y su compañero Peter Christopherson, alias "Sleazy".[1] El dúo trabajó junto en varios temas antes de que Balance eligiera el nombre Coil, según sus propias palabras, para elegirlo se inspiraron en la omnipresencia de la figura de la bobina (en inglés: coil) en la naturaleza. Coil sigue siendo uno de los grupos de música industrial más influyentes y populares.
