Se sitúa en el estado de Nueva Gales del Sur, en el mar de Tasmania, a 82 kilómetros de Sídney.
Su área metropolitana abarca varias ciudades como Corrimal o Dapto.
En cuanto a economía se dedica a la minería de carbón, cría de ganado, productos lácteos, hierro...
Esta ciudad es turística gracias a sus costas en el mar de Tasmania.
La ciudad se fundó en 1815, y se nombró ciudad en 1834, se le otorgó la primera municipalidad de toda Australia, en el año 1859. Ya en el año 1947 se fundó el área metropolitana, juntando varios municipios siendo este el más grande.
