William Paley (Peterborough, 14 de julio de 1743; 25 de mayo de 1805). Filósofo y teólogo utilitarista británico. Recordado por su analogía del relojero y sus argumentos para demostrar la existencia de Dios en su obra Teología Natural.

Obra

William Paley es fundamentalmente conocido por la apología del Cristianismo expuesta en su Teología Natural. En ella, Paley sistematiza un argumento ya alegado por Ray (1691), Derham (1711) y Nieuwentyt (1730): el diseño inteligente, revelado por la organización de los organismos e ilustrado por la analogía del relojero: si encontráramos un reloj abandonado, la compleja configuración de las partes nos llevaría a concluir que todas las piezas han sido diseñadas para un mismo propósito y dispuestas para un uso concreto. Análogamente, para Paley, el universo también tuvo que ser diseñado para que todas sus partes funcionen tan perfectamente como un reloj. Así, pues, concluye Paley, alguna inteligencia superior debió crearlo.
