Wilhelm Nikolaj Marstrand o Nicolai Wilhelm Marstrand (* el 24 de diciembre de 1810 – el 25 de marzo de 1873) fue un pintor danés.

Fue educado en la Academía de Arte entre 1826 y 1833 bajo Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. Era miembro de la Academía 1843 (medlemsstykke Erasmus Montanus, Kunstakademiet, 1843), catedrático ahí 1848 y director de la Academía en el período de 1853 a 1857 y en el período de 1863 hasta su muerte en 1873. Marstrand fue en la época de su vida nombrado como uno de los más grandes artistas daneses de todos los tiempos Era excesivamente productivo. Pintaba como joven en la Academía preferentemente los llamados motivos cotidianos copenhaguenses y de 1830 también muchos retratos y grandes trabajos ordenados por la burguesía de Copenhague.

Marstrand estaba por la primera vez en Italia de 1836, donde vendió muchas pinturas de la vida folclórica más o menos idealizada y empezó después de su regreso a Dinamarca en 1841 a pintar más de la pintura histórica, por ejemplo un gran número de escenas de Holberg y trabajos ordenados como el adorno de la Capilla de Cristián IV en la Catedral de Roskilde. A causa del entendimiento predominante del arte alrededor del año 1900, cuando se escribieron muchas biografías sobre los artistas de la Edad de Oro danesa, Marstrand es especialmente conocido por sus muchos bosquejos y dibujos. En los últimos años, sin embargo, se ha reconocido las obras que le hicieron famoso a Marstrand en su propia época, es decir las grandes pinturas literarias y narrativas, que dan a Marstrand una posición como uno de los primeros artistas daneses, que, como el francés Jean-Baptiste Greuze traslada la pintura histórica académica a motivos más seculares.
