Se constituyeron como banda en 1962, en la ciudad de Dublín (Irlanda). Sus miembros originales fueron Ronnie Drew (voz, guitarras), Luke Kelly (voz, banjo, guitarra), Barney McKenna (banjo), Ciaran Bourke (flauta irlandesa, armónica, guitarra, voz) y John Sheahan (violín). Originalmente se llamó "The Ronnie Drew Group" ("El grupo de Ronnie Drew"), pero se cambiaron el nombre a The Dubliners por la novela de James Joyce ("Dubliners") que Kelly estaba leyendo en ese momento. Su primer éxito en el Reino Unido fue "Seven Drunken Nights" (Siete noches ebrias).
En 2008 se grabó un disco homenaje a Ronnie Drew (que falleció poco tiempo después, el 16 de agosto de 2008), titulado The ballad of Ronnie Drew, en el que participaron, entre otros, Bono, Sinéad O'Connor, Christy Moore y Shane MacGowan.
