Tomioka Tessai, pintor japonés nacido en Kioto en 1837. Se dedicó a la pintura tras haberse ocupado de restaurar varios templos sintoístas. Fiel a la técnica de la tinta, sus sutiles entintados siguen los temas tradicionales de la pintura china de los letrados (paisajes, flores, pájaros) aunque acusan cierto caricaturismo típicamente japonés y reflejan una moderna libertad de pincelada y colorido. Fallece en 1924.
