T. H. White

Terence Hanbury White (Bombay, India, 29 de mayo de 1906 – Pireo, Grecia, 17 de enero de 1964) fue un escritor británico.

Después de su graduación en la Universidad de Cambridge en lengua inglesa, pasó algún tiempo trabajando como profesor en Stowe, antes de dedicarse completamente a la escritura. Sus intereses eran la caza, la aviación y la pesca.

La obra cumbre de T. H. White es The Once and Future King, conocida en España como Camelot, una serie de novelas que reescribían la obra de Thomas Malory sobre el Rey Arturo. La serie incluye:

  • La espada en la piedra (The Sword in the Stone) (1938), sobre la juventud de Arturo, su educación y cómo llegó a ser rey.
  • La reina del aire y las tinieblas (The Queen of Air and Darkness), originalmente titulada The Witch in the Wood (1939), novela que narraba la parte del ciclo artúrico que trataba de la búsqueda del Grial.
  • El caballero malhecho (The Ill-Made Knight) (1940), sobre Lancelot, el gran caballero y amigo de Arturo que lo traicionaría con su esposa Ginebra.
  • Una vela en el viento (The Candle in the Wind) (1958), que trataba de los últimos años de reinado de Arturo y la relación con su hijo Mordred.
  • El libro de Merlín (The Book of Merlyn); encontrado el manuscrito entre sus documentos, fue publicado póstumamente en el año 1977. Un alegato pacifista y «anarquista», contra los nacionalismos que solo saben librar batallas y contra el comunismo que según el autor es antinatural.

Sin embargo, T. H. White escribió muchos libros más, algunos bajo seudónimo. Entre ellos se incluyen:

  • Mistress Masham's Repose, un libro para niños en el cual una niña descubre un grupo de liliputienses (personas diminutas del libro Los viajes de Gulliver, de Swift) que viven cerca de su casa.
  • The Master, un libro para niños.
  • The Goshawk.
  • The Godstone and the Blackymor, un libro de viaje sobre Irlanda.
  • England Have My Bones, una novela histórica.
  • The Age of Scandal and The Scandalmonger, colección de ensayos sobre Inglaterra del siglo XVIII.

Murió en el Pireo, Grecia, a bordo de un barco, cuando retornaba a su hogar después de un viaje a América.

Curiosidades

  • La película de animación de Walt Disney The Sword in the Stone (1963) (En España fue conocida como Merlín el Encantador) se basó en La Espada en la Piedra
  • El musical de Broadway Camelot y su posterior película de Hollywood se basa en The Once and Future King.
