Sura fue una antigua ciudad en la parte sur de la antigua Babilonia, localizada al oeste del río Eufrates. Era conocida por su producción agrícola, la cual incluía uvas, trigo y cebada. fue además un centro importante de la enseñanza de la Torá, además de origen de una yeshiva importante, la que, junto con yeshivas de Pumbedita y Nehardea, dio origen al Talmud babilonio.

Fue conocida por su producción agrícola, que incluía uvas, trigo y cebada. También por ser un centro principal de de estudio de la Torá, y sede de una importante academia, fundada por Rav (Abba Arika) en el siglo III. Dicha academia, junto a la de Pumbedita, creó el Talmud de Babilonia.

Según Rav Sherira Gaon, Sura también tuvo el nombre Mata Mehasia, que es mencionado en el Talmud.
