Samvatsara es un término en sánscrito para "año". En la tradición hindú, hay 60 Samvatsaras, cada una de las cuales tiene un nombre. Una vez que todos los samvatsaras son más de 60, el ciclo comienza de nuevo. En ocasiones, uno se evitará, según el recuento se basa en la posición zodíaca de Júpiter, cuyo periodo alrededor del Sol es algo menos de 12 años (el ciclo completo de 60 abarca cinco años Jovian). Los sesenta Samvatsaras se dividen en 3 grupos de 20 cada Samvatsara. Los 20 primeros de Prabhava a Vyaya se atribuyen a Brahma. El próximo 20 de Sarvajit a Parabhava a Vishnú y el último 20 a Shivá.
