Ronald Frank Aldrich, fue un pianista, compositor, arreglista y director, nacido en Erith, localidad de Kent, Reino Unido, el 15 de febrero de 1916; y fallecido el 30 de septiembre de 1993 en la Isla de Man, Reino Unido

Hijo único de un comerciante de tienda, a la edad de tres años comenzó el aprendizaje del piano, en la escuela Guildhall School; aunque había iniciado sus estudios de música con el violín. A principios de la década de los años 40 empezó a tocar profesionalmente, participando con la orquesta Folkestone Municipal, pero pronto su carrera se vio perturbada por el comienzo de la Segunda Gran Guerra. Sin embargo, durante la guerra misma tocó con la orquesta de la Real Fuerza Aérea, a tiempo que hacía los arreglos musicales.

Finalizada la guerra la orquesta continuó su actividad con la denominación de Squadronaires; (literalmente en inglés: escuadra o comando del aire), la más conocida banda militar de baile del momento, de la cual también fue integrante Sid Colin, guitarrista, y en ocasiones vocalista.

En los años siguientes, y bajo la dirección de Aldrich, la agrupación fue una de las más populares en su género en Inglaterra; no obstante, en 1964 se disolvió, pero hasta entonces Ronnie Aldrich permaneció con el grupo. A finales de los años 60 estuvo vinculado al famoso programa “The Benny Hill Show”, del cual fue director musical durante unos 56 episodios entre los años 1969 a 1989.

Período de los dos pianos

La siguiente etapa le llevó a ser director musical de Thames Television, cadena televisiva de la época, y, de manera ocasional, grababa algún álbum, o efectuaba presentaciones en emisoras de radio. Aún así, estuvo cerca de treinta años sin presentarse en los escenarios.

Aldrich alcanzó la mayor notabilidad con el desarrollo de sus grabaciones estéreo para dos pianos con la London-Decca entre los finales de la década de los 60, y, en el curso de los 70, cuando, ideó, ingeniosamente, que ambos pianos realizaran fraseos musicales en uno u otro de los dos canales del equipo estereofónico: ya individual, o simultáneamente, de modo que el oyente, escuchase “dos pianos” en un fascinante diálogo musical. A esta ingeniosa idea se añadió la tecnología de avanzada de la empresa de grabación, tanto en la alta fidelidad del sonido, como en el eficiente “espaciamiento” estereofónico, tecnicismo este, que puede ser medido en decibeles; la técnica llamada (Phase 4 Stereo), más el sistema i.m.20c.r.; esto es, veinte canales de grabación individualmente monitorizados.

Conjuntamente con “el equipo Aldrich”, (The Aldrich team), y el apoyo del Ingeniero de sonido Arthur “Butch” Bannister, quién ideó como balancear el sonido de manera perfecta; logró, Ronnie Aldrich, este alcance en la interpretación musical de avanzada. En realidad, fue utilizada con gran provecho la técnica de poder grabar “de nuevo”, y con gran métrica, “sobre” música previamente grabada, escuchando a través de audífonos. Es la llamada técnica de duplicación, o “doblaje”; (Overdubbing, por su designación en inglés). Añadir la grabación de nuevo sonido, a un sonido previamente grabado, solo que, con el uso de los “dos canales” estéreo. Radica aquí, la sensación de “espacio” y percepción auditiva de “profundidad” de sonido de los “dos pianos” junto al respaldo orquestal. Es, ante todo, no obstante tratarse de un objetivo tecnológico, un recurso inapreciable, en cuanto a esparcimiento, recreación y apreciación musical.

Los dos pianos

El primer disco grabado con el sistema phase 4 stereo fue el álbum “Melody and percusión for two pianos”, en 1961, con doce temas, entre los que se encuentran “April in Portugal”, de Ferrao y Kennedy; “Young at heart”, de Richards y Leigh; “Ruby”, de Roemheld y Parish; y “Golden earrings”, de Young, entre otros. Le siguió el álbum “Ronnie Aldrich and his two pianos, en 1962, interpretando piezas de los grandes maestros, con arreglos del género popular; entre los cuales se halla “Clair de lune” y “Reverie”, de Debussy; “Liebestraum”, de Liszt; además de temas netamente populares; “Stranger in Paradise”, de Wright y Forrest, y “Till de end of time”, de Kaye y Mossman. En 1963 fue publicado el álbum “The magnificent pianos of Ronnie Aldrich”, con acompañamiento de orquesta de cuerdas, con temas como “Ebb tide”, de Maxwell; “I'll be seeing you”, de Fain y “The very thought of you”, de Noble. En 1964, “The romantic pianos of Ronnie Aldrich”, con “September song”, de Weill y Anderson; “Deep purple”, de DeRose, y “Lonely lover”, del mismo Aldrich. El quinto álbum fue publicado el mismo año, “Christmas with Ronnie Aldrich”; con piezas como “Let it snow”, de Jule Styne y Sam Cahn; “Toyland”, de Glenn MacDonough y Victor Herbert; y “Silver bells”, de Jay Livingstone y Ray Evans; y en 1965, dos álbumes; el primero, “The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich”, que entre sus doce temas contenía “Charade” de Henry Mancini, tema de la película homónima con Audrey Hepburn y Cary Grant; “Ship of dreams y “Gardens of Ibiza”, originales de Ronnie Aldrich; “The girl from Ipanema” y “Felicidade”, del brasileño Antonio Carlos Jobim; y “I wish you love”, del francés Charles Trenet; para citar algunos. Le siguió.el disco “That Aldrich feeling”, también de 1965, con los temas, “My favorite things”, de Rodgers y Hammerstein; “Come closer to me”, del cubano Osvaldo Farrés; y de los compositores Livingstone y Evans, “Mona Lisa”, entre otros temas.

Antecediendo las grabaciones con la Orquesta Festival de Londres, los primeros dos álbumes ya mencionados fueron realizados con una agrupación, también concebida y dirigida por él, en la que utilizó bajo, batería, guitarra clásica, guitarra eléctrica, órgano, marimba, arpa clásica, campanas chinas e instrumentos de percusión que incluían castañuelas, maracas, güiro y bongó. Todo, dirigido a lograr, con tal riqueza instrumental, llenar de colorido musical el lienzo donde plasmar una obra magistral, independientemente de que los temas correspondientes perteneciesen al género popular. De similar manera fue concebido el álbum ya nombrado, “That Aldrich feeling”; las restantes grabaciones si fueron realizadas con orquesta de cuerdas, o bien, con coro y orquesta. Posteriormente, en algunas de las grabaciones más recientes, Aldrich incluyó en algunas de ellas la participación del trío vocal femenino “The Ladybirds”.

En 1966 fue editado el disco “All time piano hits”, con piezas como “Bewitched”,de Rodgers, “Miserlou”, de Roubania, y “Vodoo Moon”, del portorriqueño Noro Morales; acerca de este álbum Rodger Bain dijo: “La música de Ronnie Aldrich es música de perfección, la música que, suave y plena provee toda atención a los más diversos detalles. Tal atención al detalle y al efecto pleno es lo que confiere a Ronnie Aldrich y sus pianos una imagen distinguida. Tal vez sea, este metódico “refinamiento” la razón del eficiente, suave y dulce sonido logrado”.

He aquí un comentario musical y técnico de Martin Eccles acerca del álbum de Navidad “Christmas with Ronnie Aldrich”, que luego fue llevado al formato de Disco Compacto por la casa Vocalion: “La primera parte de piano se toca en vivo en el estudio con la orquesta, mientras la segunda parte es superpuesta (over dubbed) en la grabación original, causando la impresión de que hay dos pianistas tocando, ingenioso recurso ideado por Ronnie Aldrich; agradable y emotivo álbum de Navidad, de gran amenidad para el oyente. Remasterizado por Mike Dutton en Vocalion, tiene estupendo sonido, con ambos pianos en escena a la izquierda y la derecha”.

Arreglos musicales. Orquestación.

Los arreglos, muy diversos, se fundamentan en un cuidadoso estilo, que no admite predominio a un determinado instrumento. Tal meticulosidad se observa en las grabaciones de los dos primeros discos, y en el séptimo disco, no realizados con orquesta. En el tema “Young at heart”, una guitarra da apoyo a la melodía que comienza en el “primer” piano, y enseguida, tal música es “cantada” por el “segundo” piano, en un brillante intercambio de fraseos del lenguaje musical. De tal modo, en los temas musicales, participan diversos instrumentos; de percusión unos, y de melodía otros. Crótalos, platillos, maracas, un órgano lejano, una guitarra, en definitiva un extenso retablo, de variados y disímiles matices. Los arreglos con orquesta sola, o bien con orquesta y coro, son obviamente de mayor riqueza instrumental, mas, también con la meticulosidad en el estilo, sin innecesarias estridencias. Tanto el álbum “Top of the world” como “The way we were”, llevan el sello del Jazz de la “vieja escuela”, con una muy característica ejecución de la batería; tal es el caso del tema de Barry White, “Love’s theme”, o, “Have you heard”, de Pinder. Por supuesto el tema “Top of the World”, de Carpenter, y “I got a name”, de Fox, son temas emblemáticos, en los que, sin detrimento de la orquesta o el coro, la batería hace gala de sus infinitos recursos. En cambio en otros discos, sin el recurso del coro, la música es mas transparente, así, en el álbum, “The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich”, en el que, temas como “The sound of music”, de la película del mismo nombre, -versión en inglés-, con Julie Andrews, original de Rodgers y Hammerstein, y, en, “I wish you love”, de Charles Trenet, y otras piezas, los “dos pianos”, y, en general, las cuerdas, constituyen el motivo principal que captura al oyente. Aldrich no usó saxofones, trompetas, clarinetes u otros instrumentos de banda en sus arreglos musicales. Solo eventualmente corno francés o trompa y algún trombón, siempre con mucha sobriedad. Vida personal

Ronnie Aldrich vivió junto a su esposa Mary en la Isle of Man, en el Mar de Irlanda. Aficionado a la navegación a vela, procuraba el contacto con la Naturaleza y el aire del mar, junto a sus preciados perros, usualmente en búsqueda de inspiración para su música, pues, además de tocar el piano y dirigir, también fue un prolífico compositor. En ocasiones recibía la visita de uno de sus productores en London-Decca, su amigo el productor musical Mark White.

Posterior a la desaparición de la discográfica London, Aldrich grabó algunos discos a “piano solo”, como el álbum “One fine day”, del sello Amberjack TDA, AJK-902, de 1981, bajo su dirección y arreglos, en el Centennial Concert Hall, en Winnipeg, Canadá, con acompañamiento de la orquesta Winnipeg Symphony.
