River of No Return, conocido en castellano como Río sin retorno (España), Almas perdidas (Argentina) y Almas rebeldes (Venezuela), es un western de 1954 dirigido por Otto Preminger y protagonizado por Robert Mitchum y Marilyn Monroe.

La película es particularmente notable por su ritmo rápido, en el cual influyó la edición de Louis R. Loeffler, con muchos cortes rápidos entre escenas. Mitchum y Monroe realizaron gran parte de las escenas de riesgo del rodaje, llegando Marilyn Monroe a romperse una pierna durante el mismo. Río Sin Retorno se rodó en los parques nacionales de Banff y Jasper, situados en Alberta, Canadá.

Tanto Preminger como Monroe fueron forzados a realizar esta película contra su voluntad, debido a obligaciones de contrato. Ambos expresaron su frustración sobre el guión, el cual consideraron poco sustancial. Sin embargo, la película obtuvo un notable éxito y se recuerda como un popular western clásico.

Argumento

Una hermosa mujer que pretende zafarse de la influencia de un malvado jugador de póker intenta unirse a un granjero viudo que viaja con su hijo, y que ha acudido al pueblo al llamado de un conocido que luego resulta que ya ha muerto cuando ellos llegan. Pero se verán obligados a huir perseguidos por el tahúr y tendrán que cruzar territorios infestados de indios en pie de guerra.
